Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers Through Hands-On Discovery

The Illinois Tollway welcomed local Girl Scouts for “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day,” offering hands-on activities and real-world insight into careers that help keep our transportation system moving safely, efficiently and sustainably.
Designed to spark curiosity and expand awareness of science, technology, engineering and math careers, the event connects young women with professionals who plan, design and deliver projects serving millions of drivers across the region each year.
“As industry leaders, we have a responsibility to help build a future workforce that sustains and enhances our transportation system through new ideas, fresh perspectives and sustainable practices,” said Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse. “When young women see themselves reflected in engineering and leadership roles, it elevates and expands what they believe is possible to achieve.”
During their visit, Girl Scouts explored core engineering, construction and environmental concepts through interactive activities that mirror real-world Tollway projects, including:
• Blue Planet – demonstrating the limited supply and value of the world’s freshwater resources
• Surface water station – identifying land uses and how pollution can affect rivers and streams
• Groundwater station – showing how water moves through soil and shallow aquifers
• Spaghetti tower – building a free-standing structure out of spaghetti noodles that can support a marshmallow
• Penny bridge – constructing a bridge capable of holding up to 100 pennies
Through demonstrations and small-group conversations with Tollway engineers, planners and environmental professionals, participants learned firsthand that engineering blends technical knowledge with creativity, teamwork and a strong commitment to public service.
Introducing students to engineering early helps broaden understanding of the many career pathways in transportation. It also strengthens the industry by encouraging diverse perspectives and innovative thinking.
By working in teams, testing solutions and refining their designs, Girl Scouts experienced the same problem-solving mindset that drives infrastructure improvements across the Tollway system. Events like “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” help ensure the next generation is prepared to shape a safe, sustainable infrastructure future.
To commemorate the experience, each Girl Scout received an “I [heart] STEM Girl Scouts” patch, celebrating their curiosity and encouraging them to keep exploring STEM opportunities.
