How Illinois Tollway Women Found Their Path to Science

Science doesn’t always begin in a lab.

Sometimes it starts with a middle school laboratory experiment. Sometimes it begins with a simple question or a trip to a national park that sparks a lifelong love for nature.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re celebrating Illinois Tollway women whose journeys into science began with curiosity – and grew into careers that shape our environment and our future.

Environmental Planner Amber Wyss and Senior Environmental Planner Kelsey Musich remind us that there’s no single path into science – only a willingness to explore, ask questions and stay curious.

As they reflect on what first inspired them and how their younger selves would feel seeing where they are today, their message is clear: science is for girls who wonder, girls who explore and girls who aren’t afraid to imagine themselves doing something cool.
