International Women in Engineering Day, celebrated annually on June 23, recognizes the achievements, leadership and contributions of women engineers around the world.

The 2026 theme, “Engineering Intelligence,” highlights the expertise, creativity and problem-solving skills engineers bring to addressing complex challenges and improving communities.

At the Illinois Tollway, women engineers play a vital role in planning, designing, building and maintaining infrastructure that serves millions of drivers each year. Their work helps deliver safe, reliable transportation while advancing innovation across the agency.
Engineering offers opportunities to make a lasting impact, whether through transportation, construction, technology or other fields that help shape the future.

Encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering strengthens the profession by bringing diverse perspectives and ideas to the challenges ahead.

In recognition of International Women in Engineering Day, Illinois Tollway Project Manager Diana Arreola shares her perspective on engineering, lifelong learning and the opportunities available to future generations of women in the field.

The Illinois Tollway is proud to celebrate the many women engineers whose talent, dedication and leadership help keep Northern Illinois moving forward.
