Inside the Tollway

The Illinois Tollway is delivering improvements at toll plaza systemwide to support a barrier-free Tollway system, improve traffic operations, address aging infrastructure and eliminate roadway obstacles.

The work is part of a multi-year effort to modernize ramp toll plazas across the system.

Most Tollway ramp toll plazas were originally designed around traditional toll collection, including canopies and barrier walls that guided vehicles through toll collection areas. With cashless tolling, those features are no longer needed.

Modernizing the ramp toll plazas across the system includes removing canopies and replacing them with monotubes supporting upgraded tolling equipment, while also taking down barrier walls. Work also includes upgrades to pavement, lighting, electrical systems and signage.

Of the Tollway’s 64 ramp toll plazas, 49 are being improved. The other 15 were originally constructed for cashless tolling.

Once work is complete, customers will benefit from a modernized tolling environment that supports safe, smooth travel across the Tollway system.
