Toll Plaza Improvements
The Illinois Tollway is delivering improvements at toll plaza systemwide to support a barrier-free Tollway system, improve traffic operations, address aging infrastructure and eliminate roadway obstacles that are no longer necessary with the transition to cashless tolling.
In In 2026, work is scheduled to be completed at nine mainline and ramp toll plaza locations systemwide with new work beginning at 13 new locations.
Construction Update (4/28/26)
I-294
Halsted Street Toll Plaza (2025-2026) – The ramp connecting northbound Halsted Street to northbound I-294 is closed and a detour is posted. The ramp is scheduled to reopen in 2026.
O’Hare North Toll Plaza (2025-2026) – Traffic shifts are in place to relocate the toll plaza. No shoulders will be available in the area as construction continues into 2026.
O'Hare South Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - As part of a future Illinois Department of Transportation project to improve I-190 operations and roadway access for O’Hare International Airport, IDOT is relocating this plaza. Traffic is reduced to a single lane on the ramps connecting southbound I-294 and eastbound I-90 to westbound I-190 to remove the old plaza. In addition, ramp closures and detours will be scheduled overnight between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. throughout the project, as needed, to complete the work.
Golf Road Toll Plaza (2025-2026) – The ramp connecting eastbound Golf Road to northbound I-294 is closed and is scheduled to remain so into 2026. A detour is posted.
75th Street Toll Plaza (2026) - Work is under way at the toll plazas on the ramps connecting 75th Street to I-294. Occassional overnight ramp lane closures will be needed to complete the work.
95th Street Toll Plaza (2026) - Work is underway on the ramp connecting northbound I-294 to 95th Street. A ramp closure and detour will be needed later this year in order to complete the work.
I-90
River Road Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - One I-PASS lane is closed, leaving two remaining I-PASS lanes open. Additional traffic shifts are scheduled, but access will remain throughout the project.
Arlington Heights Road Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - Work is under way at the toll plazas on the ramps connecting Arlington Heights Road to westbound I-90 and eastbound I-90 to Arlington Heights Road. The ramp carrying traffic from eastbound I-90 to Arlington Heights Road is reduced to a single lane for work at the plaza. Weekend-long detours will be scheduled later this year for toll equipment installation
Illinois Route 53 Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - Work is underway at the plaza on the ramp connecting eastbound I-90 to southbound Illinois Route 53. Lane closures will be scheduled as needed to compete the work.
Barrington Road Toll Plaza (2026-2027) - The ramp carrying traffic from westbound I-90 to Barrington Road is reduced to a single lane for work at the toll plaza. Weekend-long detours will be scheduled later this year for toll equipment installation.
Illinois Route 31 Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - The ramp connecting westbound I-90 to southbound Illinois Route 31 is closed and a detour is posted. The closure and detour are scheduled to last into summer.
I-88
Highland Avenue/Downers Drive Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - Work is underway at the Highland Avenue Toll Plaza. During this work, the ramps connecting eastbound I-88 to Highland Avenue will be reduced to a single lane.
Winfield Road Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - Work is under way at the toll plazas on the ramps connecting Winfield Road to westbound I-88 and eastbound I-88 to Winfield Road. Lane closures and detours will be scheduled as needed to compete the work.
Farnsworth Avenue Toll Plaza (2026) - Work is underway at the Farnswroth Avenue Toll Plaza. During this work, the ramp connecting westbound I-88 to northbound Farnsworth Avenue.
Orchard Road Toll Plaza (2026) - Work is underway at the Orchard Road Toll Plaza. During this work, the ramps connecting Orchard Road to eastbound I-88 and westbound I-88 to Orchard Road will be reduced to a single lane.
Customer Impacts
Electronic message signs and construction signage will be put in place in advance to alert drivers to scheduled closures, traffic patterns and work zone speed limits.
Short and long-term ramp closures will be necessary to complete toll plaza improvements. In addition, shoulder closures and traffic shifts will be used to provide room for a work zone and safely accommodate traffic.
Work Zone Safety
The Illinois Tollway is committed to ensuring that all Tollways and local roads remain safe for both drivers and workers during construction, which is part of the agency’s overall commitment to roadway safety.
Work zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present.
