Toll Plaza Repairs
The Illinois Tollway is delivering improvements at toll plazas systemwide to support a barrier-free Tollway system, improve traffic operations, address aging infrastructure and eliminate roadway obstacles that are no longer necessary with the transition to cashless tolling.
In 2025, work is scheduled to be completed at the 163rd Street Toll Plaza on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and at the East Riverside Toll Plaza on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90). Work is also scheduled to begin at nine mainline and ramp toll plaza locations systemwide.
Construction Update (8/18/25)
I-294
Halsted Street Toll Plaza (2025) – The ramp connecting northbound Halsted Street to southbound I-294 is closed through fall and a detour is posted.
O’Hare North Toll Plaza (2025) – Traffic shifts are in place to relocate the toll plaza. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained, and no shoulders will be available in the area as construction continues throughout 2025.
O'Hare South Toll Plaza (2025) - As part of a future Illinois Department of Transportation project to improve I-190 operations and roadway access for O’Hare International Airport, IDOT is relocating this plaza. Traffic is shifted at the plaza with two lanes maintained, and reduced shoulders available throughout construction. In addition, durring the week of August 18, the ramps connecting southbound I-294 and eastbound I-90 to westbound I-190 are scheduled to close overnight between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. and detours will be posted. Three nights of closures will be needed.
Golf Road Toll Plaza (2025) – The ramp connecting eastbound Golf Road to northbound I-294 is closed and is scheduled to remain so through fall. A detour will be posted. In addition, daily lane closures will be scheduled Golf Road under I-294 and on the ramp bridge connecting eastbound Golf Road to northbound I-294 in July for bridge deck repair work.
I-90
River Road Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - Under the existing toll plaza canopy structure, the far left I-PASS lane is closed, leaving two remaining I-PASS lanes open with a work zone on the right. Traffic is scheduled to remain in this configuration into summer 2025 and will be followed by new traffic shifts closing two I-PASS lanes on the right, leaving one I-PASS lane open with a work zone on the left. Delays are expected.
Arlington Heights Road Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - The ramp connecting northbound Arlington Heights Road to westbound I-90 is closed and scheduled to remain so through mid-September. A detour is posted. In addition, work is planned this fall on the ramps connecting eastbound I-90 to Arlington Heights Road and southbound Arlington Heights Road to westbound I-90. Traffic shifts and additional ramp closures and detours will be scheduled as needed to complete the work.
Illinois Route 53 Toll Plaza (2025-2026) - Work is underway at the plaza on the ramp connecting eastbound I-90 to southbound Illinois Route 53. Lane closures will be scheduled as needed to compete the work.
East Riverside Boulevard Toll Plaza (2023-2026) - Traffic on the ramp connecting East Riverside Boulevard to eastbound I-90 is shifted to the right. The ramp is scheduled to remain in this configuration through summer.
Customer Impacts
Electronic message signs and construction signage will be put in place in advance to alert drivers to scheduled closures, traffic patterns and work zone speed limits.
Short and long-term ramp closures will be necessary to complete toll plaza improvements. In addition, shoulder closures and traffic shifts will be used to provide room for a work zone and safely accommodate traffic.
Work Zone Safety
The Illinois Tollway is committed to ensuring that all Tollways and local roads remain safe for both drivers and workers during construction, which is part of the agency’s overall commitment to roadway safety.
Work zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present.
